Lancaster City Council

Lancaster City Council wishes to recruit a reliable, enthusiastic, self-motivated individual to assist in the delivery of the important practical services provided by Environmental Services. Street Cleansing is a very high profile service and we need the best people available.

The work can be varied and interesting and it is essential you can appreciate the important contribution these services have in improving our local environment, economic development and the image of the area. Your role will be part of a team that maintains the cleanliness of the districts streets, parks and open spaces.

Based at the White Lund Depot in Morecambe, the main duties of the post will be to walk with a handcart and remove all litter and detritus from a scheduled area of the district.  Other duties include emptying of litterbins within a defined area, assisting with the removal of fly tipping, snow clearance and de-icing.

You must possess good communication skills, have the ability to learn quickly and undertake a range of duties with minimum of supervision.

A full driving licence is essential as this role entails travelling from site to site, transporting equipment, and removal of fly tipping and emptying of litterbins. Large distances will need to be covered.

The hours of work will be 37 hours per week, working 5 days out of 7 on a shift rota basis, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays. The administrative centre for this position will be White Lund Depot.

The nature of the position means that inevitably you will be required to work in all weather conditions. Personal Protective Equipment will be provided.

Earlier this year Lancaster City Council unanimously declared a climate emergency and will therefore work towards reducing carbon emissions to net-zero by 2030. As part of this role, you will be expected to participate and work towards reducing carbon emissions.

Excellent benefits include: A Local Government Pension Scheme (the Council makes a 15.5% contribution). Discounted gym membership and discount on days out, activities and retail.

Interview date: Wednesday, 30 October 2019
