Lancaster City Council

There’s never been a more exciting time to consider joining Lancaster City Council. We have highly ambitious plans for enhancing the economy, the environment, neighbourhoods and the wellbeing of the district’s communities. Our vision is for the district to thrive as a vibrant regional centre in the north west of England.

We have already launched a number of exciting initiatives which we know will contribute significantly to the future ambitions of the Council. These include the use of electric vehicles, the refurbishment of refuse collection vehicles, taking on private work and MOT’s.

To help support our exciting plans for the future, we are seeking a highly motivated and driven Motor Vehicle Technician to work within Lancaster City Council’s Vehicle Maintenance Unit to deliver a first class service to both the council and private customers.  Based at the White Lund Depot in Morecambe, this post has the responsibility for looking after and maintaining the Council’s fleet so they remain in a good serviceable condition for front-line services.

Your new role

As a Motor Vehicle Technician working within the Vehicle Maintenance Unit, you will be maintaining the Vehicles and equipment used by front line services that are essential to the upkeep of the district and the health and wellbeing of its residents. The Vehicle Maintenance Unit team also carry out over 600 Taxi tests a year, plus private servicing repairs and MOT’s. We are looking to recruit a motivated individual who will be able to work as part of a team, whilst using their own initiative to get the job done.

This post is a permanent position. Based at the Vehicle Maintenance Unit at the White Lund Depot you will be working 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday on a shift pattern basis. Shift patterns may be adjusted in the future in accordance with the working practices and requirements of the service.  You will also be required to provide out of hours vehicle breakdown cover, which will include evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays, on a shift rota basis.

What you need to succeed

For this role, it is desirable you have a NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) qualification to service and repair LGV vehicles. Ideally you should have previous experience in a similar role and experience of vehicle electrics, hydraulic and pneumatic systems would be desirable.  You must be a creative thinker who can deliver at a pace and think outside the box.

A full current UK driving licence is essential to this role, as the Motor Vehicle Technician would need to carry out road tests, to bring vehicle in to the workshop for repair, collect parts from suppliers, attend vehicle breakdowns in and out of normal working hours and for a Motor Vehicle Technician to become an MOT tester a category B driving licence is needed.

You must be able to work on a shift rota basis if necessary in accordance with the needs of the service.

Earlier this year Lancaster City Council unanimously declared a climate emergency and will therefore work towards reducing carbon emissions to net-zero by 2030. As part of this role, you will be expected to participate and work towards reducing carbon emissions.

You may be required to undertake Standby duties to cover out of hours work.

Excellent benefits include: A Local Government Pension Scheme (the Council makes a 15.5% contribution). Discounted gym membership and discount on days out, activities and retail.
