Lancaster City Council

Lancaster City Council wishes to recruit a reliable, enthusiastic, self-motivated individual to assist in the delivery of the important practical services provided by Environmental Services. Street Cleansing is a very high-profile service and we need the best people available.

The work can be varied and interesting and it is essential you can appreciate the important contribution these services have in improving our local environment, economic development and the image of the area. Your role will be part of a team that maintains the cleanliness of the district’s streets, parks and open spaces.

Based at the White Lund Depot in Morecambe, the main duties of the post will be to walk with a handcart and remove all litter and detritus from a scheduled area of the district. Other duties include emptying of litterbins within a defined area, assisting with the removal of fly tipping, snow clearance and de-icing.

You must possess good communication skills, have the ability to learn quickly and undertake a range of duties with minimum of supervision.

A full current UK driving licence is essential as this role entails travelling from site to site, transporting equipment, removal of fly tipping and emptying of litterbins. Large distances will need to be covered.

The hours of work will be 37 hours per week, working 5 days out of 7 on a shift rota basis. The rota for this position will predominately be Wednesday to Sunday, however you will be required to work other shift patterns in line with the business needs, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays.

Earlier this year Lancaster City Council unanimously declared a climate emergency and will therefore work towards reducing carbon emissions to net-zero by 2030. As part of this role, you will be expected to participate and work towards reducing carbon emissions.

The nature of the position means that inevitably you will be required to work in all weather conditions. Personal Protective Equipment will be provided.

Excellent benefits include: Local Government Pension Scheme (the Council makes a 15.5% contribution and employee contribution is 5.8%). Discounted gym membership and discount on days out, activities and retail.

Please note the Council is currently reviewing its pay and grading structure and the salary may be subject to change.
